Data Science & Big Data Analytics New Budget Season 2015


With the economy slowly improving, IT leaders are more optimistic that the corporate purse string will loosen up in 2015, and they’re eager to bring new technologies into the world in addition to just keeping the lights on. Computerworlds annual forecast survey of IT executives shows that budgets are indeed continuing to make a nice recovery. Some 43% of the 194 respondents said that they expect their IT budgets to increase. That’s up from 36% in last year’s study.

This year’s average anticipated up is 13.1%, and overall, the expected changes in IT budgets reported by all respondents average out to 4.3 %. IT is expected to gain kick up spending on security tools, Customer-facing technologies and information exchange/collaboration technologies that comprise the so called SMAC stack – social and mobile tools, analytics systems and cloud computing.
The one trend that we can expect is not only the amount of data increasing, but also a great boost in the market, which will flaunt the solutions for Data Science & Big Data Analytics. Data Science & Big Data Analytics is expected to follow in the footsteps of cloud computing because, just as cloud computing has become conventional, it is expected that Data Science & Big Data Analytics will also become mainstream. However, the basic question that arises is usually centered on how long it will take for solutions to become practical as well as sustainable for traditional firms.

Senior Data Scientist
wanted to work for a leading consultancy in London.​ The Senior Data
Scientist will have advanced, deep and wide knowledge of data analytics –
statistics, machine learning, predictive modelling, heuristic methods,
data mining, etc.​ with experience across many applications.​ You must
have experience in programming with any of the major statistical or
analytical packages such as Python, SAS, R, SPSS & Matlab.​

The
Senior Data Scientist will lead the development and delivery of high
quality data analytics that form part of consultative offerings,
products and business strategy.​ Lead and undertake business analysis
related to data analytics.​ You will relate statistical and other
analytical results to real world problems and explain the results to
non-technical clients and colleagues and be independent, proactive,
creative and inventive to solve problems to enhance and develop existing
and new analytics related products and services.​

This is a
Hands on role for a Senior Data Scientist and you will use SQL
programming and/​or statistical packages for the delivery and execution
of standard analytics services efficiently and consistently.​

Data Science & Big Data Analytics Recruitment



Whilst continuing my personal studies around the subject of Data Science & Big Data Analytics and more importantly, sponsoring and attending several conferences. It is clear that unlike many generic “IT” vacancies, consultants seeking work in this space are not only motivated by money and management potential. This was also compounded by an article I read which in short, flagged up the following:-

“Many people dream of working as a data scientist at a great company such as Google or Facebook, bringing home a good salary, and enjoying the perks of a thriving, employee-centric firm; however, there's more to life than a nice salary and an onsite barbershop. If you go into data science just for the perks, that's a huge mistake. To be a successful data scientist, you need to love data science.
Data scientists love to solve problems, write code, build charts and graphs, and work all night with others who love the same things. I'm not saying you should live to work, though work-life balance becomes a lot easier if you enjoy what you do. For good data scientists, it's not just a job, it's a state of mind -- they believe they were born to do their job, and they feel fortunate they can make a good living at it.

As a leader or a manager, it's important to hire the right people for the data scientist position. Some people may already have a sense they're not right for data science, and others may have a false sense of optimism. Either way, it's your responsibility to protect your organization and your interviewee from an improper fit.” 

I take pride in what I do and I am very passionate in this space. I have been working closely with Rackspace in the States and a number of other company’s where I was approached to facilitate several seminars on opportunities in the UK, EMEA & APAC for strong post-grads with aspirations to get into Data Science & Big Data Analytics. As a result, I feel well positioned to assist with any clients or candidates who are looking to get into the Data Science & Big Data Analytics space.

It’s not an easy task, but try me I do love a challenge.

You will be work directly with prospective customers’ technical resources to devise and recommend solutions based on the understood requirements as well as analyse complex distributed production deployments, and make recommendations to optimize performance as well as master the Hadoop stack, the Hadoop Eco-System products and maintain proficiency and currency as the technology evolves and advances. You will need to achieve and maintain proficiency with Hadoop cluster and Hadoop Framework installation, debugging, and performance measurement/optimization

Skills needed are:

  • Familiarity with Hadoop and the Hadoop Eco-System framework

  • It is a  must that you are familiar with the  Java ecosystem and enterprise offerings

  • Solid background in Database administration or design. It would be good if you have experience using R and the algorithms provided by Mahout

  • The Big Data consultant must understand big data use-cases, and recommend standard design patterns commonly used in Hadoop-based deployments with knowledge of the data management eco-system including: Concepts of data warehousing, ETL, data integration, etc

Data Science & Big Data Analytics

My clients are especially interested in hearing from gifted scientists who not only have exceptional data analysis and problem solving abilities but also have what it takes to discern the hidden patterns and signals within different data sets.





Preferred Experience and Skills:

·        Advanced degree in applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning, engineering, economics, social sciences, or related fields (Master's degree required, PhD preferred).

·        Strong algorithmic and programming skills. Capable of designing and programming new data mining algorithms.

·        Solid grounding in applied mathematics and statistics including expertise in several of the following (or related) techniques: Bayesian modelling, multivariate regression, logistic regression, machine learning, cluster analysis, decision trees, time series analysis and forecasting, factor analysis, structural equation modelling, item response theory, Markov chains, and data visualization.



In addition you need to be familiar with disciplines such as:

·        Machine learning: using computers to improve as well as develop algorithms  

·        Natural Language Processing 

·        Conceptual Modeling: to be able to share and articulate modelling 

·        Statistical analysis: to understand and work around possible limitations in models 

·        Predictive Modeling: most of the big data problems are towards being able to predict future outcomes 

·        Hypothesis testing: being able to develop hypothesis and test them with careful experiments



You will need experience in “Big Data” as well as predictive modelling, optimization, machine learning, neural networks using a range of advanced technical tools (Python, SAS, Hadoop, R, Matlab, Machine learning, natural language processing, CPlex, C++, etc.)

A big data scientist understands how to integrate multiple systems and data sets. You need to be able to link and mash up distinctive data sets to discover new insights. This often requires connecting different types of data sets in different forms as well as being able to work with potentially incomplete data sources and cleaning data sets to be able to use them.
